Arcadia is an online saga based on the Star Trek universe, inspired by Star Trek movies and television productions.  For the first eight years of its existence, the story was shared: Interactively composed by various contributors, writing chapters showcasing unique characters in dramatic situations, emailed to a common mailing list (often bearing a "round robin" aspect), centered around characters on the United Federation Starship Arcadia (See Arcadia (group).)

Arcadia began in September 2001 with a time setting of 2378, then jumped three years (2382-85) in 2004. Unlike many similar venues, it maintains "real time" chronological progression, similar to television series productions. Hence, a year from now is a year later in the fictional world. Year 6 (2007/2387) brought an in-story time jump to 2407/344 CE. Due to decreasing participation, the interactive aspect essentially ended as of November 2009/346 CE, with the saga continuing solely under its initiator, Sasoriza.

Arcadia takes a more serious approach to fan fiction than sims or RPGs, relying on plot, quality writing, character motivation, and extrapolations of scientific possibility, from traditional Trek and science fiction staples as well as modern innovations, to paint implications of Star Trek's future which are different compared to other Trek fan fiction forums and Star Trek itself. Given today's accelerated technological development and scientific understanding, Arcadia's future is more advanced in some aspects than commonly envisioned or accepted by Star Trek fans. Continuity differs as a result as well.

Arcadia's exploits have taken the ship and her crew on diverse adventures to exotic, distant locales, including other times, while examining topics such as politics, religion and philosophy. Part of Arcadia's "mission" is to highlight aspects of the utopian future envisioned by Gene Roddenberry, and provide social commentary bearing on real life.

continuity

Arguably, all of Arcadia takes place in an alternate timeline, possibly a parallel universe. Since its inception, many events and details in Arcadia continuity have differed from "mainstream" Trek continuity, becoming increasingly divergent since 315 CE, such as the introduction of quantum slipstream drive on Federation starships, a wormhole network and subspace transporters.

Within Arcadia's purview, there have been two notable continuities. The first began in November 2001 at Yahoo! Groups. On this list, in-story continuity ran from 2378 to 2380.

There was a previous attempt to launch Arcadia from Sept.-Oct. 2001, on a mailing list since lost.

In May 2003, a revised in-story reality continued from 2380 in a "new" continuum, marked by a more serious approach to writing and a switch to a new mailing list. In April 2005, this list-site was revamped as the Star Trek: Cadre mailing list and the old picked up again, continuing Arcadia's adventures on the old mailing list, in the same (revised) continuity.

Many characters have come and gone in this setting. The longest-running has been Stephen April, since November 2001.

name

why is it called Arcadia?

The name Arcadia came from arcade, a gaming emporium where players can gather, drawn from Sasoriza's childhood experiences in video arcades, playing arcade games like Galaxian.

The name was first applied to the original starship Arcadia, Star Trek: Arcadia's premiere setting.

With Arcadia's shift in focus over the years, the name came to symbolize the planet Arcadia, as well as other sources.
